Shop with the Seasons: Taste the Best of WA

What does it really mean to eat with the seasons? And how can we make the most of it?

What does “in season” mean?

When a fruit or veg is “in season”, it’s the best time of year to grow and eat it! This can change based on the weather, the area (for example, Western Australia vs New South Wales), and other factors. For example:

  • In WA, tomatoes are in season in Summer and Autumn
  • But in NSW, they’re in season in Spring.

Why shop with the seasons?

Better prices!

When something is in season, there’s lots of it. This means the cost of getting in season fruits and veg to supermarket shelves are lower. Keep in mind it costs less to bring food from local farmers than interstate. All of this means, it’s often cheaper at the checkout.

Better taste!

Because it gets from the grower to your shopping basket quickly, produce in season is super fresh, crispy, and delicious.

Helps the planet and local farmers

We are lucky here in WA that local farmers grow so much produce with the seasons. Buying this food cuts down on the need for food to travel across the country and supports local businesses.

I don’t have time to check what’s in season!

No worries – the shops probably do that work for you. Because there is a higher supply of in season fruit and veg, more of them are on the shelf. Plus, in season food is often on special, so look for the sale signs.

That way you save money and support WA farmers, win-win!

Trying new fruits and veg

By shopping with the seasons, you might end up with some items in your basket that aren’t normally part of the weekly menu, like:

  • Berries in spring – add to smoothies, muffins and yoghurt
  • Fennel in winter – bake in the oven or thinly slice and add to salad
  • Bok choy is available almost all year round – a great addition to stir-fry or fried rice.

This can be a great way to add new flavours and textures to weeknight dinners. For recipe ideas, head to the recipe tab on our website and keep an eye on our socials!
